Steel weight calculator
List the bars, plates and sections, and get the mass of each line and the total in kilograms and tonnes. Useful for checking a supplier's quote, a variation or a progress claim.
Total mass
5.3 kg
0.005 tonnes.
How the mass is worked out
Mass per metre is the area of the cross-section multiplied by the density of the steel: 7,850 kg/m³ for carbon steel and 7,930 kg/m³ for stainless. The line mass is the mass per metre, times the length, times the quantity.
Hollow sections have rounded corners. The calculator takes the external corner radius from AS/NZS 1163 (two times the wall thickness up to 3 mm, two and a half times up to 6 mm, and three times above), which comes within about 1% of the manufacturers’ tables. For a priced quantity, use the supplier’s published mass.
For universal beams and columns, channels and angles, pick “Other section” and enter the kg/m from the supplier’s section table.
